Bradley James rules out Merlin spin-off

Merlin star Bradley James thinks it's time to "hang up the chain-mail" and won't be appearing in any Merlin spin-offs...

Aside from the fact that Merlin creators Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy wouldn't be involved (having left Shine TV for pastures new at the end of series five) little has been heard about the mooted spin-off for the BBC fantasy show.

Last last November, Broadcast reported that Shine was looking to develop a potential Merlin spin-off set in the same world and featuring characters from the Arthurian series, though if one of those characters is Arthur Pendragon, Bradley James won't be the man to play him.

Speaking to the LA Times, James confirmed that a spin-off "...was something discussed, but I think it’s time for me to hang up the chain mail, to be honest with you, and pass the mantle on to the next person who shall take on the throne of Arthur Pendragon. The post-Merlin era is an exciting time to look forward to… Variety is the spice of life. That’s the fantastic thing about acting is all the different challenges it can provide you with. To limit yourself just to one would be foolish, therefore I’m looking forward to different things that come my way."

I loved this show so much !! I will miss it, it was great T.V. ! My husband and I enjoyed all the characters very much we have season 5 recorded and ready to go. I must say though I am very sad to see them all go !! I think the show could have ran 10 more seasons ! The producers saw the popularity why didn't they keep it going !! There were still many storys to be told !! So Sad !!

Love the show.. and the ending showing Merlin in our present time presents many possibilities. It would be nice to see the main characters come back in some ways in a future world.. Merlin is the constant, but the rest are re-incarnations. In a way, a re-incarnated Arthur could be Merlin' pupil... The possibilities are great. But it would work better if the original cast could come back in some shape or form. Bradley could play Arthur again, but a different Arthur, same look, but different person. Again, except for Merlin, everybody is the same, but different. Well, it's wishing thinking I s'pose :)

I too am a Merlin fan. Bradley James, mentioned in several interviews that he did not see Merlin continuing after season 5. I am not confident the reason given for ending the show is because they wanted to end the season on top. I feel that there was so much more they could have done with the story line. It just may be the same situation as the series Friends. Some of the actors thought they could move on to do bigger and better things and others just grew tired of doing the series. The only Friends actor you still hear about is Jennifer Aniston. Let's hope this does not happen to Colin and Bradley. I wish the entire cast well and I hope to see them reunite in another spectacular series.

I understand why they ended the series but I wanted to see Gwen stand side by side with Merlin and him cast a spell or summon the small white dragon. Now that I think about it what happened to that dragon? Did it die, start going insane with out Morgana, or something else? If they had 14 episodes in season 5 I think that all the fans would like that. But it's a little late to make another episode for a season that's on DVD.

The dragon got bigger, Morgana raised him. You may remember it fought the war in the end of the episode and Merlin told him to back off?

All these silly actors, wanting to go out and try other roles. David Tennant. Matt Smith. Bradley James. Colin Morgan. Don't they know that we need them HERE in OUR shows? Who cares if they go on to bigger and better things? Not possible! Nothing's better than "Merlin" or "Doctor Who."

I say that in jest, but only partially! :P

What they NEED to do is at least do a movie where we get some closure. Have it set in the present day. Have Arthur come back and do something heroic. Heck, he doesn't even need to do it in chainmail, since Bradley James seems so eager to hang it up. He can wear a hoodie and sweat pants for all I care. But while Katie McGrath said that it was the perfect way to end Merlin, I whole-heartedly disagree. No closure. They never even did what the entire show was supposed to be about!!! How is that the right time to end the show?

Argh. :(
