Gotham TV Series Casts The Riddler
There will be plenty of villains on display in FOX's Batman prequel, Gotham...including The Riddler.
One of Batman's most recognizable (yet somehow underused) foes, The Riddler, is coming to FOX's Batman TV series, Gotham. The series, which tells the story of Gotham City before it had a caped crusader to keep it safe, will primarily focus on young Jim Gordon and the exploits of the Gotham City Police...but that doesn't mean there isn't room for some of those colorful villains. With that in mind, Gotham will present Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, the man who will one day be known as the Riddler.
Edward Nygma is described (via Deadline) as "is a brilliant but socially awkward forensic scientist who’s eccentric and outgoing and desperate to be liked." So, the Riddler starts his criminal career on the inside? Interesting. It sounds like the young Mr. Nygma will be a minor role in the pilot, but there's plenty of room for this character to come back in future episodes!
Smith joins a cadre of bat-baddies that already includes Camren Bicondova as a young Selina "Catwoman" Kyle and Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald "Penguin" Cobblepot. Mr. Smith is also part of a very small circle of actors who have played the Riddler in live action, with Frank Gorshin being the original (and most prestigious) and Jim Carrey being the most...ummmm...recent. Of the big four Batman villains, there's only one missing from this picture...any bets on when Mr. J will make an appearance?
