Beware the Batman: Safe, Review

Batman and Katana try to protect a scientist from the League of Assassins in the best episode of the series so far!

It may be too early in the show’s run to really judge how Beware the Batman stacks up against its predecessors, but “Safe” is an episode that utilizes many of Batman’s great qualities to maximum effect. Whether it’s the ridiculous technology, the shadowy always-night world of Gotham (have we even seen this show in daylight yet?), or the hand-to-hand combat skills, this one finally felt like a proper Batman story. After last week’s disappointing installment, it didn’t come a moment too soon.Batman and Katana are left to protect a scientist who has been targeted by the League of Assassins. Why? Because he has invented a device which will revolutionize how the world uses energy. The League of Assassins sends a squad of ninjas to get their hands on this guy, led by the Silver Monkey. And who’s the scientist? Dr. Jason Burr. Burr is used primarily for comedic effect in this episode, trying (and failing) to flirt with Katana (in her civilian identity), but comic fans may know that he eventually becomes DC Comics “I-am-not-Serpentor” villain, Kobra. For fans who aren’t sold on the CGI look of Beware the Batman, this is the episode that should do the trick. While this writer prefers more “traditional” animation (nothing looked better than Young Justice to my eyes), there are some things that simply can’t be done as well in that format. Batman’s high-speed motorcycle chase with a bunch of League of Assassins ninjas and the rapid-fire martial arts battles that followed were spectacular, and rank among some of the best Batman moments I’ve seen on the small screen. “Safe” also gets my vote for favorite easter egg of the year. Alfred’s signal watch, Batman’s last resort to contact him, makes the exact same sound as the Batphone on the Adam West show. I’m an easy audience, what can I say? Between fun nods like that, the Kobra tease, and the disembodied voice of Lady Shiva as the leader of the League of Assassins (not to mention the fact that we’re getting closer and closer to seeing Katana properly team-up with Bats), “Safe” really pushed all the right bat-buttons this time. Den of Geek Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for all news updates related to the world of geek.
