Aquaman Solo Movie in Development
Warner Bros. has hired two writers to develop an Aquaman solo movie starring Jason Momoa. Details here.
It's been no secret that Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Reports of his involvement first surfaced back in December of 2013, with additional confirmations coming in June, although Warner Bros. have been strangely coy about officially announcing him in the role, despite the fact that we've all but seen him swimming around in an orange top at this point, so take that as you will.
Nevertheless, when word first got out that Momoa was involved with the role, that was the first bit of positive mainstream attention that the character had in quite some time. By default, that also makes Mr. Momoa Aquaman for the Justice League movie and whatever else Warner Bros. has planned on their rapidly expanding superhero calendar.
It would appear that one of those projects is an Aquaman solo movie. Warner Bros. have brought on Will Beall (Gangster Squad, and who also took a pass at a Justice League movie script in recent times) and Kurt Johnstad (300: Rise of an Empire) to develop two separate scripts for the project. And may the best Aquaman win, it would seem. The information on Beal and Johnstad's duties comes to us via The Hollywood Reporter.
For their part, DC Comics have been doing their very best to position Aquaman as an A-list character and an integral part of the Justice League over the last few years. They've played up his power levels (he takes on Darkseid's parademons with ease in the first New 52 Justice League story), and put serious creative firepower on his solo book in the form of Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. Aquaman will also be the star of an upcoming animated movie, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.
In other words, you won't be able to ignore him for long.
