Call of Duty Advanced Warfare: 5 Things We Want from Sledgehammer
The first trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was released yesterday, which got us thinking, what do we want from it?
**Update 5/3/2014**The first trailer for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was revealed yesterday, so let us represent our list of the 5 things we want from Sledgehammer.**
It’s been a long time coming, but with the release of the first image from their upcoming Call of Duty game, it looks like Sledgehammer’s first official entry into the series is coming out this fall. According to them, it will be “next-gen first.” With that being said, here are a few next-genny features that we would love to see included.
Improved Enemy A.I.
No Call of Duty campaign has quite touched the intensity of Call of Duty 4, even if the story writers threw feasibility to the wind and dug plot holes to China. When the story went, a lot of other flaws with the series reared their head, like the shooting gallery A.I. that shouldn’t have been let out of basic training. The series could get back some of its vitality with competent enemies. Let’s face it - we’re not impressed with all of the bombast anymore. Call of Duty is in a pissing contest with itself to outdo each game’s water cooler moments. Why not bring those back by simply making the enemies more cunning?
Strip Down the Multiplayer
Call of Duty 4 made Call of Duty what it is today thanks to its RPG-lite levelling, killstreaks, and perks. However, it looks like the developers have over-indulged themselves with these ever since. If anything, the multiplayer has been made a mess in recent years thanks to too many killstreaks, weapons, perks, weapon attachments, perk perks, kill perk weapon streaks, attachment perk kill weapon streaks. I can’t keep this shit straight. Let’s tone it down a bit, shall we, Sledgehammer? Opt for quality over quantity with your killstreaks, and get a little more creative with the perks. Say, for instance, a perk that makes your grenades not give a warning on your enemies’ screen when you throw them.
Bring Back Co-Op Story Mode
Remember that one time Call of Duty: World at War let you play through the whole campaign with a friend either on the couch or over the internet and then we never saw this happen again? Yeah - what the ever-living hell Infinity Ward/Treyarch. The dedicated co-op campaigns are by no means a bore, but this was a blast! The aforementioned poor enemy A.I., should the issue remain unaddressed, would be much easier to swallow if I were at least shooting their idiotic lights out with a friend in tow.
Take A Chance
What Activision seems to have forgotten is that Call of Duty 4 can directly attribute its success to the fact that it broke the mold and tried something new. It took a franchise rooted in World War II and made it current. Now, however, the monotony is palpable. Treyarch mixed it up a little with Black Ops 2’s alternate endings and RTS-lite levels and I would love to see some more experimentation. Do something, anything, Sledgehammer, to break the mold, even a little!
Stick To Your Guns, Sledgehammer!
When Sledgehammer first approached Activision about making a Call of Duty game, they proposed something very unique for the series - a third-person adventure game in the vein of Uncharted. Development for this game was interrupted when Jason West and Vince Zampella, along with other key Call of Duty developement team members, staged their mass exodus from Infinity Ward in the midst of Modern Warfare 3’s development. Sledgehammer jumped in to help finish the game and did a bang-up job. Hopefully, this didn’t make Activision decide to have them stick with the formula and ditch their unique vision for the franchise.
